When Life Gives You Apples ...

Make Apple Sauce

Picture
September is apple season in California, and this month we’ve been busy at several schools using apples in creative ways.  We filled large rubber tubs with water and used tongs to capture, transport, and sort mini apples by color.  We used apple chunks and toothpicks as our building materials to create towers, robots, space ships, and more.  One student at Lowell Elementary even built a two room house with a roof for the ants she saw walking by.  Using old-fashioned spiral peelers and a kid-friendly recipe, we made apple sauce in a blender.  The students loved the taste AND the excitement of using the blender.  Here is the simple recipe:
  • 5-6 peeled and cored apples (spiral peelers do this in one step and are kid-friendly to operate)
  • 1 squeeze of lemon
  • 2 teaspoons of brown sugar
  • 6 shakes of cinnamon
Blend until it looks like applesauce, then enjoy.

Using seasonal ingredients for tastings, art projects, science experiments, and more is a fun way to bring new materials into the classroom and to introduce the idea of seasons, seasonal eating, and knowing our place in the world.
