Deck the Halls…Then Step Outside
The holidays bring plenty of sparkle - classroom decorations, end-of-semester art projects, assemblies, and celebrations. But with all that dazzle can come a little frazzle. When schedules get stuffed like stockings, even joyful moments can feel overwhelming. That’s when stepping outside becomes the simplest, most refreshing reset. A few minutes in a courtyard, garden, or school green space gives students (and teachers!) a chance to breathe, stretch, and decompress. Nature has a way of tamping even the noisiest of voices in our heads. The rustle of winter leaves, the crunch of pine needles beneath our feet, or the gentle sway of evergreen branches can calm anxiety faster than a mug of warm cocoa. “There is no Wi-Fi in the forest, but I promise you will find a better connection.” - Ralph Smart These small sensory moments give students a break from academic pressure and holiday hype, helping them regulate emotions and return to class and home - more grounded. A Natural “Recess Reset” For students juggling final assignments and holiday excitement, school gardens and nature trails act like built-in wellness tools. Even a five-minute trip outdoors can be a mini personal retreat, boosting attention and resilience. It’s like a time-out, but in a positive way. Here are a few ideas any of us can incorporate:
Warning: Side effects may include measured breathing, lowered blood pressure, excessive smiling, and…joy! Nature Spaces Brought to You by Ground Ed School nature spaces offer something students can’t get from screens, decorations, or even the most spirited school assembly: room to simply be. When we incorporate these at each school campus, we intend for them to foster curiosity, creativity, and calm; all wrapped up in one sustainable package. From observing colorful insects, to practicing balance, to breathing in the smell of local sage, students can connect with something steady and grounding during a season that can feel chaotic. These intentional outdoor areas extend our edible garden lessons. Whether studying science or completing an assignment, organic green zones encourage focus and collaboration and help everyone feel more connected; to each other and to the world around them. It’s always nice to know that when stress starts to snowball, calm is just a few steps outside, especially during the busiest time of year. Comments are closed.
